Miami senior Pat Hinkel is closer to being in that spot these days than he was during his previous RedHawk seasons. Add Comment OXFORD, Ohio—Freshman guard Roderick Lawrence (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips) has been dismissed from the Miami University men’s basketball team for reasons of detrimental conduct, head coach John Cooper announced Friday (Aug. 31). “These decisions are never easy, but there are standards for a Miami University men’s basketball player to which our young men must adhere,” said Cooper. Bobcats hope to shine in spotlight08/31/2012 By STEPHEN UHLMAN During the spring, the Ohio Bobcats flipped the switch on a countdown clock in their locker room. That clock, counting down the seconds until the team’s contest against the Penn State Nittany Lions, is now closing in on zeroes. U-Mass was shut out by a Big East power the Minutemen’s FBS debut, while Akron fell in Zips first outing under new head coach Terry Bowden. By EVAN MEYER AKRON, OH – Since he was hired as the Akron Zips head coach last December, Terry Bowden has been changing the culture around the football program, installing vim and great vigor into a program that has not seen bright days for a long time Thursday night, he and his team took their first steps together on that long road back to respectability and found out there is still a long way to go as the Central Florida Knights easily defeated the Zips 56-14 at InfoCision Stadium. However, there are 10 other teams that, with a little bit of magic and a pinch of good luck, could be there in late November. By EVAN MEYER Akron Zips head coach Terry Bowden was late to his weekly press conference on Tuesday. His explanation was simple. The team had their final practice before Thursday’s 2012 season opener with Central Florida at InfoCision Stadium. “It’s game week; we are excited and we are ready to go.” Bowden said. “We have done as we can. We have prepared as much as we can and the players are mentally ready to play.” By MIKE SMITH It’s been four years since the Buffalo Bulls won a MAC East championship. They went 5-3 in MAC play (8-6 overall) under head coach Turner Gill IN 2008 and competed in the International Bowl. The following year – under Gill – UB dropped to 3-5 MAC (5-7) overall. The slide was on! Buffalo has gone 5-19 in two years since as head coach Jeff Quinn attempts to re-establish the Bulls as contenders. There is still work to be done. By PAUL D. BOWKER Surrounded by historic New England architecture, Charley Molnar, the first-year head football coach at rising FBS (NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision) school University of Massachusetts, will quickly turn to history when talking about the prospects of the 2012 football season. By MIKE SMITH Even good pitchers are often most vulnerable in the first inning. Fighters have to beware of that quick knockout. Central Michigan, likewise, will need to be smart AND strong through the early portion of its schedule. |
