OXFORD, Ohio--Roderick Lawrence (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips), a 6-foot-4, 180-pound guard, has signed with the Miami University men’s basketball program, head coach John Cooper announced Friday (June 22).

“We are excited to have Roderick join the family,” remarked Cooper. “Our staff is very familiar with him through the recruiting process last year. He decided to sign with Morehead State, but after they went through a coaching change and he re-opened his recruiting we were able to get involved.

"It came down to us and Penn State, and we’re fortunate to have Roderick come to us from Orlando, Florida. He’s a terrific kid who has really continued to improve, and I think that improvement will flourish as he gets stronger and continues to increase his weight. He has some good skills and with some of the things we want to do he’ll certainly fit in well, and he’ll fit in well as a person because he’s a classy kid.”

Lawrence averaged 16.3 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 2.0 spg and 3.1 apg for Dr. Phillips High School as a senior last season as the Panthers amassed a 23-6 record and a 7-0 league mark while advancing the regional semifinals.

The team was ranked as high as No. 3 in the state in 2011-12. During his sophomore and junior campaigns, the Panthers compiled 28-7 records each year, while earning No. 2 rankings in the state and advancing to the Class 6A State Championship game both seasons.

During Lawrence’s three seasons on the varsity team, Dr. Phillips went undefeated in league action each season, compiling a combined 23-0 league record while posting 79 overall wins.

Lawrence joins guards Reggie Johnson, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./St. Joseph) and Geovonie McKnight (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown) as Coach Cooper’s first signing class with the RedHawks.

After surviving a regular season and several post-season challenges, players from two NBA teams have an opportunity to realize their dream of an NBA championship this month. Kenny Hayes, meanwhile, is focused on another dream – reaching the NBA! After earning Most Improved Player honors in the NBA D-League (Developmental League) in 2012, Hayes feels he has improved his chances.

The former Miami University and Mid-American Conference standout saw somewhat limited action in his first year of play in the D-League. This past year, however, he appeared in 44 games and averaged 33 minutes per contest.

Hayes provided the Maine Red Claws with a point guard who could score. Overall, he averaged 17.1 ppg, 4.1 rpg, and 5.2 apg. His best offensive performance was a 52-point effort March 4 in a home game against the Springfield Armor.  Hayes connected  on 18 of 29 shots overall, including 4-of-8 from behind the arc. He was a perfect 12-of-12 at the line.
